O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while the singer was still in high school. She made it into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement about her performance. O'Neil was praised by the judges. She was however a complete loser in the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked at the result and exhorted fans to vote for those with great singing talent, like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she never placed in the third place again. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
